PIGS

There was a slight strengthening of the DAPP for week ending 16 September to 108.96p/kg dw. The average carcase weight of pigs in the sample rose to 76.47kg.

The average EU pig price fell by 2% for the week ending 10 September to the equivalent of just under 109p/kg dw. In Germany, in particular, producers are reported to have panicked about a possible sharp drop in price and sent more pigs to slaughter.

During August, clean pig slaughterings in England and Wales were 2% higher than in the same month of 2005.

CATTLE

The price of overall prime cattle sold at GB auction markets averaged 115.52p/kg lw for the week ending 16 September. Throughputs of young bulls increased during the week, whereas the number of steers being sold decreased by 7%.

The overall GB deadweight cattle price rose by nearly 3p to average 212.7p/kg dw. The R4L steer price also increased, up by nearly 2p to average 216.6p/kg dw.

In August, young bull slaughterings in England and Wales showed a 17% decline compared with August 2005. Overall, prime cattle slaughterings were down 8% compared with year earlier at 92,400 head.

SHEEP

The GB auction market SQQ price for lambs fell by nearly 3p for the week ending 16 September, averaging 103.49p/kg lw. The provisional GB deadweight SQQ fell by over 1p to average 246.7p kg/dw overall. In contrast, the R3L price rose marginally week-on-week to average 251.2p/kg dw.
