Fair price call from EBLEX

 - Published:  11 October, 2006

Livestock farmers should not allow their stock to be sold at anything less than fair prices, the English Beef and Lamb Executive (EBLEX) have warned.

With lamb prices holding firm and a Europe-wide shortage of beef, livestock farmers in England should ensure they are getting a fair price for their stock before they sell, said EBLEX chairman John Cross.

His comments follow the release of figures showing retail beef sales in England rising by 1% in the last year and lamb sales rising by 3%.

He said: "These figures clearly show that the English market for beef and lamb is robust - and we have been saying that for some time. This, combined with the import needs of other European countries, shows there is very firm demand for quality beef and lamb and absolutely no reason for anything other than a very healthy market."
