Countryside Live to host beef ribs competition

The Royal Smithfield Club has announced that the National Festival of Meat Beef Ribs Competitions will be held this year at the Countryside Live Food & Farming Fair at Harrogate; the Scottish Winter Fair at Ingliston; the Welsh Winter Fair at Builth Wells and at The Royal Smithfield Christmas Fair at Shepton Mallet.

Beef producers, in co-operation with their abattoirs/processors, will have the opportunity to show the public the very best of British meat in competitions across the country with total prizes of over £3,000. It is also hoped to extend the beef ribs competitions to include tasting panels to assess the eating quality of the Champion and Reserve Champion entries.

In addition, at Countryside Live, a saddle of lamb competition will be held.

John Coultrip, chairman of the club, welcomed the invitations received from the three shows to hold the competitions.

"It is a genuine challenge for producers to compete in these classes: the retail cuts really do highlight quality British production. We are also delighted to be holding the beef ribs competition at our Royal Smithfield Christmas Fair, alongside the Club's traditional livestock classes," he said.
