What is PGI?

 - Published:  21 July, 2006

Welsh Lamb and Welsh Beef have been awarded Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status by the European Commission, in recognition of the high quality meat and Wales's strong regional identity.

The PGI scheme establishes a link between quality standards and the traditions and environment of an area, and assures consumers that the lamb and beef bearing its distinctive logo have been born and reared in Wales.

This branding is highly valued across Europe and has been a major factor in helping to win substantially increased exports for Welsh Lamb and Welsh Beef products in the past year.
