De-stressing livestock

SCIENTISTS from the US Agricultural Research Service (ARS) have developed a system that, it claims, calms cattle herds, in turn, lessening the risk of workers being injured.

Calves are rated 1-5 for calmness or aggression prior to handling. Unstable cattle are removed from the herd and painful tools, such as prods, are avoided, calming livestock going through chutes. ARS added that calmer livestock also gain more weight than those subject to stress.
