Pub chain investigated as origins of 'Welsh' meat in doubt.

Five meat dishes have been withdrawn from the menu in JD Wetherspoon pubs in Wales following a Trading Standards Office (TSO) probe.

The meat in the five dishes, all described as Welsh on the menu, may not have actually originated in Wales, according to the TSO.

The five meals taken off the menu are Welsh black beef curry, Welsh lamb cawl, Welsh pork faggots, Welsh Celtic Pride curry and Welsh chicken curry.

The four meals which have been kept on the menu are Welsh Colliers Cheddar Cheese and Ham Ploughman's, Welsh Dragon Sausages and Mash, Welsh Lamb and Mint Sausages and Mash and Welsh Beef and Brains SA Ale Pie.

Charles Newman, managing director of Baraka Foods Pentre, mid Glamorgan, which supplied the meals said: "We're disappointed by this news but we've co-operated fully with Trading Standards.

"JD Wetherspoon took the decision that they wish to withdraw these products due to a question mark over our ability to meet their standards.

"We would refute that and have taken steps to ensure all of our proteins were precisely what was required - that's in place now.

"All of the products we supply are Welsh."

A spokesman for JD Wetherspoon said in a statement: "We have withdrawn these items pending an investigation by Trading Standards.

"There are nine meals on the menu with the term Welsh and we are working with the authority on this.

"We were not aware of the problem with the meals.

"JD Wetherspoon's survey the length and breadth of Wales to source local ingredients.

"We purchase these products from the supplier in good faith."
