Bacon industry more competitive than ever

The bacon industry is now more competitive than ever, according

to Arthur Reeves, former chair-man of the Provision Trade Federation (PTF).

Speaking at the PTF agm on 11 July, Reeves said that despite the market last year being "lacklustre at best", the last few months had been characterised by "short supply on the continent driving high demand from third countries", which has seen prices of pork loins "soar".

Diet and health is an area of key importance to the future of the trade, Reeves explained, and the industry needed to be "proactive with government" on the issue. "At the same time, we need to ensure that we are not forced into commitments that undermine our markets," he added. Reeves, of Dairy Crest, has now stepped down from the role of PTF chairman after a two-year stint. He has been succeeded by John Brooks, of Brook s McRobbie, a

dairy exporter
