WILTSHIRE BACON PRODUCER, SAUSAGE MAKER WIN AWARDS

Directors of family-run Sandridge Farmhouse, Rosemary and Roger Keen, who deliver their farm-produced back bacon to independent butchers, were delighted to have gained a silver in the competition.

Mrs Keen said: "About three year's ago we won a competition run by the NFU so when my husband saw this competition advertised he thought we had better give it a try."

She said she thought their success in the competition was due to their traditional curing methods.

The award-winning sausage made by Newmarket butchers, Powters, competed against regional foods throughout the UK to achieve the bronze medal in the regional and ethnic foods category. Entries came from all over England and Wales.

The Daily Telegraph Taste of Britain Awards aims to celebrate the diversity and quality of regional foods in the UK and honour and support the farmers and manufacturers responsible.

The short-listed products in each of five categories: food, drink, organic, regional/ethnic and seasonal were tasted by a panel of judges: Lord Bach, Defra minister for sustainable farming and food; Sir Donald Curry; Joanne Denney-Finch, chief executive of IGD; Lady Sylvia Jay, chairman of Food From Britain; and Judith Batchelar of Sainsbury's.
