MPs show their support for EDM as it crosses party lines
Sixty-three MPs from a spread of the political parties have now signed the Early Day Motion (EDM) in support of the pig industry and the 'Pigs Are Worth It' campaign, tabled by Richard Bacon, MP for South Norfolk, at the beginning of the month.
The MPs were prompted to sign the EDM following the rally in Whitehall on 4 March. Conservative shadow ministers for environment, food and rural affairs, James Paice MP and Peter Ainsworth MP, joined over 40 other MPs and peers to visit the rally and show their support for the 'Pigs Are Worth It' campaign.
Many took the opportunity to meet and speak with their constituents, who had travelled from across the country to London for the event.
In addition to signing the EDM, many MPs and peers are now writing to retailers and processors to urge that they pay farmers a fair price for their pigs. And a number of MPs who attended the rally have since raised the feed price issue in Parliament, by tabling questions to be answered by government ministers. Among those who have asked questions are Greg Knight MP and Henry Bellingham MP.
Richard Bacon MP said: "Saving the British pig has to be a priority for MPs from all parties. The British pig industry has the highest animal welfare standards and that's something we should be supporting. I have written to the supermarkets and processors, asking that they do what they can to help secure a fair price for British pig farmers."
