Meat for babies

 - Published:  10 December, 2007

Northern Irish meat bosses are giving new parents a helping hand with the launch of a new recipe book.

The Livestock & Meat Commission have produced the book to give parents a selection of information and recipes for weaning babies - with the emphasis on beef and lamb.

This book will be distributed through the Bounty Health Network by midwives and health visitors, which are rated as the most valuable source of information for new/expectant mothers, across Northern Ireland.

Entitled "The Right Start", the book contains all the necessary information to guide parents when feeding their children.

The LMC has developed some quick and nutritious beef and lamb recipes to inspire parents with added hot tips to reassure parents their baby really is getting the right start.

LMC Nutritionist Dr Claire McGartland says "Time is precious in most households when preparing meals especially when you have a young child to feed, so in 'The Right Start' we have included recipes and meal ideas which can be enjoyed by all the family and that can be adapted to suit the needs of a baby being weaned.

"We have included tried and tested ideas as well as guidance on iron intake and how to introduce your baby to solid food."

The recipes are available to download from the LMC website www.lmcni.com and hard copies are available from LMC.
