Halal boycott calls

Organiser Abdul Raja, who started the campaign by email, said if Muslims bought no meat each Saturday and Sunday this month, halal standards would have to be tightened. "I promise you this government will take notice; money talks," said Raja.

The campaign has received a mixed reception. Dr Yunes Teinaz, advisor to the Islamic Cultural Centre and the London Central Mosque Trust, said: "What is required is a government-supervised body for the sale and production of halal meat.

However, Masood Khawaja, spokesman for the Halal Food Authority, which licenses slaughterhouses and retailers, said the boycott was "preposterous" and that halal standards were high in the UK.

EBLEX, which has been called upon by Muslim levy payers to set up a national body to regulate halal, said it was perfectly willing to help the community produce a quality assurance scheme, but needed an agreed set of rules before work could commence.
