T&G members strike action at Grampian Foods suspended

The Transport and General Workers Union today confirmed it has suspended its planned 24-hour strike action by over 2,600 pork and poultry workers at Grampian Foods after a request from ACAS, the Arbitration Conciliation and Advisory Service.

The strike, which was due to start at 6.00am on Thursday 5th April has been suspended for 7 days. It was called after a 57% vote in support of the action in the dispute over a pay freeze, pension cuts and parity with agency staff.

Chris Kaufman, T&G national secretary for agriculture, said the request from Acas meant that site level talks would now go ahead.

"If no satisfactory progress is made, however, we will be going back down the strike route," he warned.

The T&G ballot covered Grampian Foods and its related company sites in Haverhill, Eye and Stoke Ferry in East Anglia, Witham in Essex, Wivelscombe in Somerset, Llangefni, Sandycroft and Anglesey in North Wales, Cambuslang near Glasgow, Coupar Angus in Perthshire and Fairview near Edinburgh.
