Whole Food Market CEO to give London lecture
US natural and organic supermarket visionary John Mackey is to give a London lecture on the eve of his flagship UK store launch on 6 June.
Mackey will deliver the Compassion in World Farming lecture on ethical, environmental and sustainable food production and retailing, on 5 June.
In 1980 John Mackey co-founded the first Whole Foods Market store in Austin, Texas, with a simple mission to offer more natural and wholesome foods to those typically being sold in other stores. The company offers natural, organic and ethically produced foods to shoppers who share John's concerns about food quality and the impact of its production on people, animals and the planet.
Whole Foods Market has become the world's leading natural and organic foods supermarket, with nearly 200 stores in the United States and Canada in addition to the Fresh & Wild stores in the UK.
Among John's visions is a world where farm animals are treated compassionately and cruel factory farming practices end. This vision is shared by Compassion in World Farming, the leading international organisation for the welfare of farmed animals, which this year marks 40 years of successful campaigning.
His lecture will explore his ethos of food production and retailing, from the importance of environmentally sensitive agriculture and ethical fair-trading to locally produced and sourced foods. In particular, he will explore how humane farming is vital to protect farm animals and the environment.
