School guide launch
A guide to understanding red meat and its nutritional content, in light of the new school-meal standards, has been produced by BPEX and EBLEX.
The easy-to-read, free leaflet, Red Meat on the School Menu, has been specifically designed to help school caterers meet the new requirement to regularly serve high-quality red-meat dishes.
Created because of the new Interim Food-Based standards for School Lunches, to be introduced from September 2006, the leaflet provides clear definitions of 'meat' and 'manufactured meat products' as well as confirmation on the legislation requirements and what caterers can and cannot serve.
Foodservice trade manager for BPEX, Tony Goodger, said: "The standards state that red meat must be available twice a week in primary schools and three times a week in secondary schools."
Foodservice project manager for EBLEX, Hugh Judd, added: "Lean red meat is packed full of nutrients that are important for growing children, for that reason, lean red meat should feature as part of a balanced diet for all school children.".
