MRC takes green award
A sauce and seasoning manufacturer has boosted its green credentials by winning a prestigious award in the Best Environmental Practice SME category at the Northwest Business Awards.
Manchester Rusk Company Ltd (MRC), which makes sauces, seasoning, marinades and glazes for the food industry, picked up the award for significantly reducing its impact on the environment.
Commenting on the award MRC's production manager, David Wheeler, said:
"We will continue to prioritise the best environmental practices at MRC and we are delighted for our efforts to have been recognised in this way.
"Good environmental practices should be at the heart of everything a business does- both in terms of environmental impact and cost reduction."
MRC has introduced a range of green measures since its relocation to Sharston, Manchester in 2003 and has managed to reduce its energy costs by 60%. It has also lowered carbon emissions by 12 tonnes a year, reduced landfill waste by 95% and lowered fuel costs by 50%.
Recent environmental investments by the company include highly efficient packaging machinery, a compressed air system and energy efficient lighting in the main warehouse and factory. Computer monitors have been replaced with new low energy flat screens and electronic timers have been installed on all water heating and cooling units.
"Through our own innovation, and through sourcing government funding, we have managed to reduce the impact this company makes on the environment, reduced overheads dramatically and helped to safeguard our own manufacturing future," said Wheeler.
This is not the first time that the company has been awarded for its environmental efforts. Last year it secured the Envirowise Award in the "Preserving our Environment" category at the Northwest Food Awards and took home a National Energy Efficiency Award.
