Lewins named Man of the Year

Andrew Lewins, managing director of Cranberry Foods, was presented with the Rupert Chalmers-Watson trophy at the British Turkey Awards recently.

The trophy was created in 1979 to honour those who have made an outstanding contribution and commitment to the industry.

Presenting the award, Jeremy Blackburn, British Poultry Council executive officer, said Lewins, who has been at the helm of the BPC's British Turkey Federation for five years, had helped steer the industry through some challenging times.

"With foresight and ambition, he led negotiations with Red Tractor to bring Quality British Turkey into an alliance that is already benefiting British farming, while at the same time bringing together three previous companies and forging them into one of Britain's leading turkey companies, Cranberry Foods."

Lewins said: "This is a huge surprise, as well as a great honour. I am delighted to be accepting this award at a time when, after 10 years of decline, British turkey is now a growth industry, despite the threat of cheaper imported products, the sword of Damocles that is avian flu, and unprecedented cost price inflation."
