MPs called for local sourcing after head chef at Ribblesdale High School and Technology College Kirsty Young took their taste buds back to school during a special lunch.

Young and five other school cooks from across the country were given the task of cooking for 40 MPs, including Ribble Valley MP Nigel Evans, at a special canteen lunch organised by the School Food Trust.

The first of its kind, the lunch was organised to celebrate recent progress in banishing the turkey twizzler and fat-laden temptations from canteens.

The MPs sat down to a healthy menu from which they could choose main meals of lamb lasagne, fish pie, sweet potato and lentil korma with basmati rice, served with chantilly carrots and broccoli.

After the lunch, Evans said: "The food was fantastic. The cooks produced an amazing and nutritional meal and proved beyond doubt that it can be done. Schools must now look at sourcing their food from local producers. The schools, near Clitheroe are surrounded by farms and it is hugely important that they take advantage of such great raw materials on their doorstep."
