ASDA's bid for home-grown curry
A favourite dish eaten by many in Britain, the chicken tikka masala, may soon be truly native if a campaign launched by one supermarket proves successful.
Asda is testing new growing techniques in the hope of producing not only the meat, but all the herbs and spices found in a curry.
Trials in greenhouses in Lancashire and Lincolnshire are concentrating on producing doodhi, mooli, baby aubergines and karela and plans are also underway to produce okra and mustard leaf.
It is hoped the first truly British curry will be on the shelves in three years comprising British meat, rice, herbs and spices.
Chris Wibberley, Asda's fresh produce technologist, said: "We are on the verge of producing the ultimate home grown curry."
