Welfare specialist appointed
The Farm Animal Welfare Council (FAWC) has appointed a new animal welfare specialist - Dr Michael Appleby, who is welfare policy advisor for the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA).
FAWC was established by the government in 1979 to review the welfare of farm animals and to recommend legislative or other changes that may be necessary. It promotes the five freedoms: freedom from hunger and thirst, from discomfort, from pain, injury or disease, freedom from fear and distress and freedom to express normal behaviour.
FAWC has 24 members, including academic animal scientists, veterinarians and experts in farming.
Before joining WSPA, Appleby carried out research on animal welfare at the University of Edinburgh, and then from 2001 to 2005 was vice president of The Humane Society of the United States.
