Goodbye to welfare champion

Peter Roberts, the founder and director of Compassion in World Farming (CIWF), died last month at the age of 82.
CIWF was the first organisation devoted solely to the welfare of farm animals.
Roberts succeeded on many animal welfare issues. He campaigned to ban the keeping of calves in narrow veal crates in 1966 and the ban became law in 1990. And In 1988, under his leadership, CIWF launched a pan-European petition to get the EU to grant animals a new status as 'sentient beings'. This was granted in 1994.
However, to Roberts' regret, he never managed to achieve a permanent ban on the export of live animals, which remained a high-profile issue for CIWF.
