Walker fails to get employment tribunal

Former chairman of Quality Meat Scotland, Jim Walker, has been advised he will not be able to pursue a claim of unfair dismissal, following a pre-employment tribunal hearing.

Walker, who was informed of his dismissal last year as he boarded a plane to attend a trade fair on behalf of QMS, claimed he has been 'wrongly sacked' from his position.

Evidence submitted to a pre employment tribunal alleged Walker had been caught up in a 'power struggle between differing factions'. However, QMS argued that because Walker was a consultant, not an employee, he could not bring about a case as he was not covered by the same regulations.

The tribunal ruled that the QMS interpretation was correct.

Following the hearing a QMS spokesman said: "We are satisfied with the ruling. Our decision to defend the claim followed legal advice that stated, should we choose to do so, that we were likely to succeed.

"We felt it right and proper to follow that advice and therefore avoid any unnecessary compensatory payments."
