Nominations are being sought for The Royal Smithfield Club Bicentenary Trophy which is given in recognition of a person or organisation who has contributed to the development of the British meat and livestock industry in a significant way.
In celebration of its bicentenary in 1998 the club created an annual award which requires people to nominate potential candidates. The deadline for nominations this year is 28 July. Selected by an independant panel, the members are looking for evidence of a major input in areas of technical development, marketing initiatives, training, business growth or effective representation of the industry to government and the public.
Previous winners include Sir Donald Curry, Fred Mallion, John Thorley, The late Jack Woodhead, Norman Bagley and last year's winner David Raine. Raine, a partner in a family farming business in Penrith, Cumbria was chosen for his involvement with the National Sheep Association, National Farmer's Union (NFU), Meat and Livestock Commission (MLC) sheep strategy council and the English Beef and Lamb Executive (EBLEX). He was presented with the trophy of an Armada dish set with 25 golden Guineas (worth £11,000) by past master of the Worshipful Company of Butchers Guild, Fred Mallion, at a lunch hosted by the Guild.
