Scottish chefs to lift school standards

They're cooking to impress Scotland's Rugby Captain Jason White, who will join judges this week to pick a winner in the Quality Meat Scotland School Cook Of The Year competition.

Organiser, red meat promotional body Quality Meat Scotland, received entries from all over Scotland and the judging panel has chosen eight top cooks for the annual cook-off final at Telford College in Edinburgh.

Each has submitted a school meal recipe, including pork as a main ingredient, which must meet the nutritional requirements for children and be within typical local authority budgets.

QMS interim chairman Donald Biggar said the timing of the two year-old competition was apt, as since then "the quality of school food has been the subject of unprecedented attention."

The winning cook will get £1,000 worth of holiday vouchers, while his or her school will win £1,000 worth of sports equipment.
