Durham County dinner lady takes LACA prize

Lamb cooked Moroccan-style with prunes, apricots, garlic and onion, couscous and oven-roasted vegetables followed by an apple and bilberry smoothie proved to be a winning school meal for dinner lady Lynn Hawdon of Middleton-in-Teeside Field Study Centre.

Mrs Hawdon, who is a Durham~County Council employee and cooks for 9 to 11-year-olds, won the Local Authority Caterers Association [LACA] national competition to find the best healthy school lunch for 80p.

Each contestant had an hour and a half to cook-up a two course healthy meal targeted at 11-year-olds. There were eight ladies and one man in the final who all had to produce main courses of lamb kofta and herb yogurt, pork medallions, Mediteranean chicken, Achar Murgh chicken Indian-style, Welsh lamb spaghetti bologonese, pasties and turkey.
