Sir Richard Cooper, a former chairman of the Royal Smithfield Club, has died following a car accident on Sunday.
Sir Richard was elected a life member of the Club in 1957 and joined the Club's Council in 1990, thus reviving a connection going back to 1909, when his Great Grandfather won the Royal Smithfield Show Champion with an Aberdeen Angus steer. Subsequent generations of the family have all had close connections with the RSC and the show. Sir Richard Cooper's financial experience and his connection with a wide range of agricultural organisations, including the Royal Agricultural Society of England and as past Chairman of The Rare breeds Survival Trust, was of great value to it, the RSA said this week.
Sir Richard was vice president of the Club in 1996 and chairman from 2000 to 2002. he is survived by his son, R Adrian Cooper, and daughters, Jane and Belinda.
