New head at QMS
Quality Meat Scotland has appointed a new chief executive. Forty-seven year old Uel Morton will take up his new post in July. He joins the organisation from United Farmers where he is chief executive. Interim chairman Donald Biggar said: "We are delighted to have someone with Uel's knowledge and expertise taking over at QMS. He is a well-known and respected figure in agricultural circles and brings to the organisation, and to the red meat industry, a wealth of experience in both the agri-business and financial sectors."
Commenting on his appointment Mr Morton said: "QMS has a major role to play in helping to boost the profitability of some 20,000 red meat businesses in Scotland. The industry is facing stiff challenges in the post- CAP reform era but challenges and opportunities generally go hand-in-hand. I am looking forward to playing a part in taking QMS forward and making sure that the organisation continues to meet the needs of the red meat sector during this critical period."
Mr Morton's appointment follows the resignation of Jan Polley, the previous chief executive in January, three months after the abrupt departure of chairman Jim Walker.
Mr Walker is challenging his dismissal through a tribunal. A pre-hearing into Mr Walker's claim that he was unfairly dismissed and should be reinstated is set to continue in June. The first day of pre-hearings took place last month.
