Efsis sold
The EFSIS food inspection and certification business has been sold to an Australian company SAI Global for £5.6 million.
Formed in January 1999, EFSIS was owned 60 per cent by the Meat and Livestock Commission (MLC) and 40 per cent by the Camden and Chorleywood Food Research Association (CCFRA).
The staff of around 100 people will continue to be employed by EFSIS under the new ownership of SAI Global and their UK headquarters will remain for the time being at Winterhill House in Milton Keynes.
EFSIS will operate its inspection services in a similar way under the new ownership.
The share of money from the sale will be used by the MLC for long-term strategic investment to benefit the meat and livestock industry.
Kevin Roberts, MLC Director General, said: "The Commission has worked hard to build EFSIS, but we now feel this is an opportune time for the sale which will allow the company to develop its commercial interest beyond the field of red meat."
