Welcome for beef origin decision

The announcement by the Scottish Executive that catering establishments in Scotland will have to tell customers which country beef comes from has been welcomed by Quality Meat Scotland the NFU Scotland.

Food minister Ross Finnie has announced that restaurants, pubs, cafes, hotels and other food outlets in Scotland will be required to provide better information on the origin of their beef to consumers.

Welcoming the announcement, QMS chairman Donald Biggar said: "This is wonderful news for the Scottish Red Meat industry, it will strengthen our country's reputation as a premium red meat producer and ensure that Scottish consumers and visitors know if they are getting quality Scottish produce."

He added the move would help close the gaps between retail and restaurants, and bring Scotland up to speed with France and Ireland.

NFU Scotland president John Kinnaird said that in the catering sector, very often the public haven't had a clue as to the origin of meat being sold. "That will now change and Scottish farmers and consumers will be the beneficiaries," he added.
