Forced down

Ice manufacturers and businesses that operate frozen or chilled storage units will now pay 80% less Climate Change Levy (CCL) on energy bills.

This comes after years of pressure on the government from the Cold Storage and Distribution Federation (CSDF).

CSDF chief executive, John Hutchings, said: "The Climate Change Agreement (CCA) comes as welcome relief for the temperature controlled storage sector, which has been hit hard by the escalation in energy costs over recent years. It also redresses the imbalance with food manufacturers who have been receiving a CCL discount for some five years."

CSDF has put pressure on the government for several years, but now Defra and HM Revenue and Customs have finally agreed, although the European Commission and UK parliament are yet to endorse the agreement.
