The production of tallow and gelatine from cattle vertebral columns is safe for consumers .
The production of tallow and gelatine from cattle vertebral columns is safe for consumers regarding BSE exposure and no special rules on the age of processed livestock are required, says the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA).
A report said the increased risk was so slight it was "unlikely to translate into further cases of vCJD in the population". Further risk assessments are required to assess phosphate food additives made from it.
