Inquiry call
The government has called for a public inquiry into a planning application for the redevelopment of a redundant site at Smithfield Market, which was recently approved by the City of London.
Property developer, Thornfield, which plans to re-develop the disused site said it was resolved to seeing the application through to the end.
The developers' plan is to demolish the existing building, known as the General Market, and replace it with a mix of shops, cafes and offices - costing £250m. Thornfield developers believe the scheme offers significant benefits for the meat market, the Smithfield area, and the City of London.
Michael Snyder, of the City of London Corporation confirmed that the Department for Communities and Local Government has resolved to call in the planning application, listed building consent and conservation area consent. The decisions now rest with the government.
