Pat O'Driscoll is to step down as chief executive of Northern Foods. Stefan Barden will take over her position on 5 February.

Driscoll joined Northern Foods in March 2004 and led the company through a period of transformation, culminating in the sales of chilled distribution in August 2006 and the disposal of the chilled pastry, flour milling, speciality bread and cakes businesses, which was completed in January 2007.

Driscoll said: "Since arriving at Northern Foods three years ago. I have completed an extensive restructuring, including the sale of 40% of the business and the development of a high quality management team able to meet our customers' service standards. Today Northern Foods is a simpler, more resilient and more competitive business and I believe it is the right time for me to move on."

Barden said he was pleased to be leading Northern Foods in the next phase of its growth. "We will win in our chosen markets through a relentless focus on consumers, innovatively providing them some of the best tasting food in the UK delivered to our customers daily with outstanding service. Underpinning this with operational and financial discipline, we will maximise value for shareholders."
