EU agrees on bird flu payout

 - Published:  03 February, 2006

THE EUROPEAN Union (EU) Council of Ministers has agreed how Brussels will fund the costs of national governments fighting bird flu outbreaks.

The council says the EU will fund 50 per cent of the cost of compensating producers for slaughtered poultry and animals or related products, cleaning and disinfecting holdings and equipment, plus destroying contaminated feeding stuffs and equipment.

It says it might also reimburse 100 per cent of the costs of securing vaccines and 50 per cent of costs for some emergency vaccination procedures.
