Suppliers investigated in E.coli outbreak

The outbreak, in Paisley, Scotland, was initially linked to meat from the deli counters of two Morrisons supermarkets, in Lonend and Falside Road, and investigators are now looking at the retailer's suppliers.

A 66-year-old woman died and her husband is seriously ill while a 71-year-old woman is also in hospital and an 86-year-old woman and a family of three are recovering at home.

A further woman from Paisley, aged 70, fell ill while on holiday in Ireland, having eaten meat from one of the stores two weeks ago.

The Outbreak Control Team are currently conducting a wide-ranging investigation to discover the source of the E.coli O157 outbreak and are investigating 12 suppliers which provide cold, cooked meat to Morrisons.

Samples and swabs have been taken from the two stores in Paisley and sent to labs for analysis. Morrisons staff are also being interviewed.

No other foods from Morrisons or elsewhere have been implicated in the outbreak so far and sliced cold meats have been withdrawn from sale at the two stores.
