MHS installs new boss

McGrath will take up the post on 22 January, 2007 when the existing chief executive, Chris Lawson, retires from the public service. He will, however, be joining the FSA on 1 November 2006 to familiarise himself with MHS, its operations and responsibilities.

With extensive leadership experience as a board director of a number of large organisations in the private and public sectors, McGrath has focused on delivering the highest level of customer service on a commercial footing.

This included the management of large teams across the UK in high volume operations. He is currently director of HM Revenue & Customs responsible for 70 million National Insurance accounts, together with managing shared services for 16,000 staff in HMRC & DWP.

McGrath started his career in British Gas, working his way up to become director of gas supply and progressing to operations director. He also led schemes to establish new industries in a number of countries.On leaving British Gas, he led the creation of a number of companies providing

services to a range of clients in the private and public sectors,which he

subsequently managed.

This included being chief operating officer of a company providing customer services to some of the biggest names in retail, national utilities and

financial services.

He holds a master of science degree and is on the boards of NE Chamber of Commerce, Young Enterprise NE and the NE Regional Leadership Team of Business in the Community. McGrath said: "I am very pleased to be joining the Meat Hygiene Service which plays such an important role in safeguarding public health and animal welfare throughout GB."

Chair of the MHS board, Chrissie Dunn, said she was delighted at the appointment and looked forward to working with McGrath to build on Lawson's legacy.
