£4.5m for Welsh

 - Published:  08 January, 2009

The Welsh red-meat industry is to receive a £4.5m boost.

The cash injection, announced by rural affairs minister Elin Jones, will go towards three new projects being run by Hybu Cig Cymru (HCC) - Meat Promotion under the Rural Development Plan for Wales 2007 - 2013.

The aim of the projects is to increase financial returns for beef and sheep farmers in Wales, exploit the latest technology to advance best practice, and source a wider range of economic and market intelligence to improve strategic planning.

Speaking during a visit to the HCC offices in Aberystwyth, Elin Jones said: "I am pleased to announce funding for HCC's new projects. This investment will produce major benefits for the agricultural sector and through them, the wider rural community."

HCC Chairman Rees Roberts said: "This is wonderful news and means we can press ahead with vital new projects to benefit the entire red meat industry here in Wales."
