Walford heads up Welsh Levy Board
Rural affairs minister Elin Jones has announced the appointment of Lionel Walford as Chair of the Welsh Levy Board, the red meat levy-raising body directly accountable to the Welsh Assembly Government.
The Welsh Levy Board was set up following a review of all agricultural and horticultural levy boards in Wales.
It has the power to raise and collect levy on the beef, sheep and pig industries in Wales and has various statutory functions, which include promoting the production and marketing of red meat in Wales and promoting training, research, development and operation of the red meat industry.
The board has delegated some of its functions to Hybu Cig Cymru - Meat Promotion Wales (HCC). Overall, there will be no significant change in the activities of HCC and it is expected the impact of the Welsh Levy Board on producers and processors will be negligible.
Lionel Walford joined the Civil Service in 1978 and worked for the Welsh Office for 21 years in various areas, including agriculture policy. He retired in 1999 as Director of Agriculture and went on to serve as an independent member of the Agricultural Wages Board for England and Wales.
Elin Jones said: "The board has the power to raise and collect levy from Welsh farmers and is directly accountable to the Welsh Assembly Government. I very much look forward to Lionel Walford's contribution as Chair of the Welsh Levy board."
