Renderer gets IPPC permit

Staffordshire renderer John Pointon and Sons has been awarded the A1 Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control (IPPC) permit by the Environment Agency.

The coveted permit is a major achievement for Pointon's which has spent more than £5m and two years developing new technology and looking at environmentally-friendly initiatives such as bio-diesel.

A major part of Pointon's business plan is based around the proven success of bio-diesel production from waste vegetable oil, pioneered by National Industrial Symbiosis Programme (NISP). The company is now examining the potential for producing bio-diesel from its tallow to enable it to diversify its business.

Pointon's managing director, Martin Pointon said: "The company has over the last few years improved the overall hygiene, energy efficiency and environmental-friendliness of the plant and, two years ago, opened a new processing line that is among the most modern in the world.

"As a consequence, the company was the first and still is the only major supplier of renewable energy - in the form of a specialised conditioned bio fuel from meat and bone meal MBM - to industries such as the cement industry where it is increasingly seen as a replacement for fossil fuels."

He added a significant amount of tallow produced at the Pointon's plant was also recycled to fire the boilers that are the primary source of fuel for the plant, making it almost self sufficient in energy terms.
