Competition probe demands Tesco and Asda emails

 - Published:  20 August, 2007

Competition bosses are reported to have ordered Tesco and Asda to hand over millions of emails and letters as part of an investigation into claims the chains have been pressuring suppliers to cut prices.

The investigation is part of the larger inquiry by the Competition Commission, looking into the sales methods of Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury's and Morrisons.

The supermarkets deny any wrong-doing and say they follow a strict code of conduct when dealing with suppliers.

A spokesman for the Competition Commission told the BBC legal notices, called Section 109s, had been served on Tesco and Asda.

The notices would allow the watchdog "to investigate more thoroughly", he said.

Both Tesco and Asda said they were happy to co-operate and had nothing to hide.
