NFU supports Defra decision on vaccination

The NFU has said it fully supports the chief veterinary officer's (CVO) assessment of the current control strategy following the interim epidemiological report which does not recommend vaccination at this stage.

"This decision has been taken according to the latest scientific advice and a thorough risk assessment. We agree that there is a need to keep all disease control options open depending on the progress of this disease," it said in a press statement.

The NFU added that it was absolutely essential that all livestock farmers maintain a high level of vigilance over biosecurity and monitoring of their livestock.

"Biosecurity is an essential tool in the battle against FMD and every farmer who keeps animals must take every available measure to stop the spread of this disease," it continued.
