Politicians call for consumer support
The All Party Parliamentary Group for English Beef and Lamb is calling on consumers to show their support for livestock producers in the current crisis by buying Quality Standard Mark beef and lamb.
All Party Group chairman Peter Atkinson, MP for Hexham, said in the wake of recent events it was essential for the red meat industry to get back on its feet as soon as possible: "We applaud the industry for the way in which it is working together to ensure this immediate crisis is dealt with quickly and effectively.
"Although movement to slaughter has now started across the country, it will still take some time for everyone involved in the farming and meat processing sector to return to business as usual.
"At such a critical time, British consumers can show their support for the farming community by purchasing Quality Standard Mark beef and lamb."
Atkinson added that the APG was hoping for a rapid reassessment of the current GB-wide export ban, which is currently costing the British red meat industry up to £10 million per week in lost markets.
