Frustrations rise on FMD movement ban

A meeting between Defra and industry this afternoon (Tuesday) was widely expected to confirm that movement from farm to abattoir would be allowed from Thursday, however that has not happened.

Norman Bagley, policy director with the Association of Independent Meat Suppliers, said; "We've had no commitment to slaughter on Thursday and the industry is very frustrated.

"We had a meeting with [Defra minister] Hilary Benn and Debbie Reynolds [chief veterinary officer] and we came in with the expectation that we'd be slaughtering by Thursday, but we got no such commitment."

However, despite the lack of confirmation, Bagley said he remained optomistic that slaughtering could still be back underway by Thursday. "With the latest information coming in from last nights second case of FMD, we should get that commitment soon."
