GDA labelling picks up the pace
An alternative labelling approach to the Food Standards Agency's (FSA) traffic light system is gaining momentum.
An alternative labelling approach to the Food Standards Agency's (FSA) traffic light system is gaining momentum, with 21 food and drink manufacturers and three retailers now adopting the Guideline Daily Amount (GDA) labelling scheme.
A spokeswoman for the GDA said that, by the end of the year, approximately 37% of relevant UK retail food and drink packs would carry these labels - twice the combined share of alternative schemes. She said that industry had spent 12 months developing its labelling approach, designed to help consumers assess the nutritional content of the food they buy. The industry is committed to an 18-month communications campaign to promote GDA labels - the first phase of which is now online at www.whatsinsideguide.com ,she added.
A spokesman for the FSA said: "We are happy if they want to use GDAs as part of their scheme. But our research shows it is the use of traffic light colours, which really informs consumer choice."
