NBA issues warning to Defra

The National Beef Association has cautioned Defra against using the revised valuation system for diseased animal compensation it is looking to introduce in England, Scotland and Wales.

The NBA said Defra had been stung by recurrent overvaluation and hoped to correct this by using fixed valuations for pre-designated categories of animals backed by a pre-valuation system for owners of higher value stock.

"We accept that the current system is not working well but, if

Defra reforms the current valuation system instead of using category definitions with a fixed price, it will avoid many unwanted

complications," said NBA chairman, Robert Robinson.

The NBA said the ideal solution would be to appoint a panel of valuers which could use computer records held by a number of industry organisations to establish approved evaluation templates for pedigree and commercial animals.
