Sales of Venison Soar

 - Published:  23 January, 2007

Venison is becoming increasingly popular, with one company, Highland Game, reporting sales up 40% in the last six months.

It is a healthy meat, with lower fat and cholesterol than beef, lamb and chicken. This may be fuelling its popularity, which has led in the past six months to Highland Game signing contracts to supply Tesco, Waitrose and Morrisons.

Sarah Mackie, senior buying manager for Tesco in Scotland, said: "The Christmas period saw the best ever sales of Highland Game venison."

The new year will see Highland Game touring Tesco stores and handing out samples to promote the meat.
