A fast-food takeaway in Wales has been informed that it could face a fine of up to £30,000 after illegal immigrants were found working there.
Officials from the UK Border Agency carried out a raid on Castle Kebabs in Caerphilly following a tip off that illegal immigrants were being employed.
An examination of documentation at the takeaway showed that three of the employees were failed Iraqi asylum seekers and had no right to be in employment.
After the men were stopped from working a Notice of Potential Liability was served on Castle Kebabs for employing illegal workers.
If Castle Kebabs is now unable to provide evidence that proper right-to-work checks were carried out before the men were employed fines of up to £10,000 per worker could be levied.
After the raid Jane Farleigh, regional director of the UK Border Agency in Wales & the South West, issued a warning to those in the meat trade who try to flout employment legislation.
"Illegal working is unfair on honest employers who recruit staff with the right to work in the UK and who pay them a proper salary.
"Our message to employers is clear - ignorance is not a defence. Businesses must prove that they have made the right checks.
"We are determined to step in and identify businesses that are breaking immigration laws, and we are also using our new powers to fine employers up to £10,000 per illegal worker."
