Young chef entries up
The EBLEX Young Chef Challenge has attracted its largest number of entries to date, with over 400 schools registering to take part.
The competition, now in its third year and fronted by celebrity chef James Martin, invites students aged 11 to 16 to submit original beef mince recipes using Quality Standard beef mince.
The best entries will be invited to compete in regional cook offs in December with the overall winner being invited to experience a day working as a chef in a well-known restaurant.
EBLEX Food Advisor Denise Spencer-Walker said: "The response from schools has been fantastic this year. We launched the competition to encourage young people to get cooking and educate them on how to identify quality ingredients - but most importantly show students that cooking is something to be enjoyed.
"With the new curriculum emphasising practical hands on experience, creativity and sensible food shopping, the Young Chef Challenge offers a perfect way to inspire students - and we have incorporated a number of teacher tips on how to combine the competition with food technology elements of Key Stage 3 of the National Curriculum."
Beef mince currently represents around 45% of all fresh and frozen retail beef sales in GB. Further information on the competition can be found at www.meatandeducation.com
