Foie gras stays on menu in York

Gourmet food lovers in York have been granted a reprieve to continue enjoying foie gras in the city's cafés and restaurants.

The City of York Council was to consider a motion calling for the sale of the delicacy to be banned on ethical grounds, however councillors voted to not debate the issue and instead have asked officers to compile a report.

Labour councillor Paul Blanchard, who tabled the motion, told local papers: "I am disappointed that the council doesn't want to debate the issue this evening. It is a matter of principal."

He called the production of foie gras a "brutal practice".

Local restaurateurs have described the bid as ridiculous, while other councillors have pointed out that the council has no powers to impose such a ban.
