Churchill to feature in NFU exhibition
Memorabilia featuring Winston Churchill will be one of the star attractions of the NFU's new centenary exhibition, which is being launched at its headquarters today.
Former president James Turner will be on audio, talking at the NFU's 1954 Annual General Meeting, and former Prime Minister Winston Churchill can be heard speaking at the 1953 AGM. Three display cases will highlight artefacts collected during the last 100 years of the Union's existence and include items such as an NFU membership application form signed by Churchill himself.
Seven displays covering topics such as the NFU and the Government, the NFU at times of crisis, and the NFU at war also form part of the exhibition. Four of these displays will then tour the regions and will be on show at many of the major farming and county shows across the country. The Museum of English Rural Life will then host an exhibition from October to December.
NFU vice-president Paul Temple will open the exhibition. He said: "This collection demonstrates the depth and breadth of service the NFU has offered both members and the country during the last 100 years and highlights its importance as a lobbying organisation representing British farmers and growers.
"Past presidents have steered the NFU through troubled and stormy waters, with pride and in the knowledge that farmers' resilience and passion will see them continue to provide the nation with fresh, quality produce.
"This showcase of NFU memorabilia demonstrates the very local and personal nature of our membership. It really is about their history and, through that, how their contributions have strengthened the organisation. I am proud of everything we have achieved and will continue to achieve in the next 100 years."
