Cumberland Sausage could be granted protected status after an official application was handed to the European Union. Producers of the Cumbrian delicacy are hoping EU officials will give it similar protection to the likes of Champagne, Parma ham or Greek feta cheese. The move would see sausage-makers outside the region unable to use the title "traditional Cumberland sausage".

Peter's Food Service has teamed up with Fuller's brewery to create a very British 'Steak and Ale' pie. The pie, which features a blend of Peter's pastry and Fuller's classic 'London Pride' ale, was launched at Fuller's brewery in London this week. David Jackson, technical director at Peter's Food Service said: "We are really excited to have collaborated with Fuller's on this project and are delighted to launch the pie across southern England and Wales."

Staff at the Grampian Country Food Group plant in Coupar Angus in Perthshire, who faced redundancy following the loss of a Tesco contract, have been told their jobs are safe after the firm gained new business. A decision by poultry supplier Joseph Mitchell to stop supplying the independent sector in Scotland has meant many independent butchers, caterers, hotels and restaurants have switched their chicken orders to Grampian saving up to 90 jobs.

Randall Parker Foods has launched a sustainably produced West Country Lamb range to be sold in Sainsbury's stores across the region. "The West Country offers one of the best environments for natural lamb production, with a climate and landscape that ensures it supplies the earliest available top-quality grass-fed new-season lamb," said Randall Parker's procurement director Juliet Davies.
